Kampala International University (KIU) was established in 2001 and has emerged as the topmost private university in Uganda. In pursuit of the dream to raise the next generation of problem-solvers for the East African region and indeed the whole of Africa, the University operates a multi-campus system which consists of two campuses in Uganda (The Main campus in Kampala and the Western Campus in Ishaka-Bushenyi); one campus in Nairobi, Kenya and another campus in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

Ranked number 5 in Uganda by 2019 WebometricsRanking of Universities, KIU has 49 academic departments offering a wide range
of courses in Arts, Law, Business, Communication Arts, Computer Science and Information Technology, Engineering, Education, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical and Biological Sciences, Social Science, and Technology Education, Medicine and Clinical Science, Biomedical Sciences, Nursing Science and Dentistry at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. All the programs are accredited by Uganda’s National Council for Higher Education, East Africa Community Council, and other International Accreditation Bodies.

Among the university's premier academic programs receiving special recognition is the Institutional Repository which is hosted at the University’s Iddi Basajjabalaba Memorial Library - IBML which has been adjudged by both internal and external observers to be one of the best in the region. The Kampala International University Institutional Repository (KIU-IR)is a one-stop-shop for all levels of researchers to get reference materials that would help in their literature review efforts.

To enhance student learning and lecturer's preparation, KIU provides all faculty and full-time, on-campus students with a conducive learning environment, adequate classrooms, ambivalent office spaces, ultramodern e-resource centres, access to some of the world’s best publications and easy access to high-speed wireless networking, advanced multimedia technology, and classrooms equipped with the latest educational technology. KIU makes courses and degree programs available through traditional on-campus programs, distance learning (online), and hybrid formats that combine both elements.

Across the KIU four campuses, a clean, safe, and healthy environment are provided for students, faculty, and staff, alike. The university supports a vibrant student life program for extra-curricular activities, including student government (Guild), sports, cultural and socio-cultural student clubs and organizations. KIU students compete and had emerged overall winners in many competitions across the above
activities, the most recent being the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) National Debate Tournament, on Thursday, 10th November 2019.
